Die Informelle Universität ist eine Konsequenz aus den Studierendenprotesten (und der Enttäuschung darüber) im Jahr 2003.  Sie möchte zur Kontinuität kritischer Wissensproduktion beitragen, wo diese im akademischen Betrieb als „unzeitgemäß“ abgewickelt wird. The idea of a shared point of reference for an open network in which we share resources, information and knowledges in the spirit of emancipation, as well as produce, self-attentively question and circulate new knowledges.
